After 20 years in the classroom, I’ve learned there’s nothing quite like the sparkle in a first grader’s eyes when they realize they’re a real author. One of the best ways to celebrate that moment? A publishing party—also known as a writing celebration!

Now before you start imagining balloons, glitter explosions, and weeks of extra prep—don’t worry. A publishing party doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect to be meaningful. In fact, some of the best ones are simple, joyful, and totally doable—even during a busy week.

Let me walk you through how I’ve hosted publishing parties in my first grade classroom (and how you can too).

So What Is a Publishing Party?

A publishing party is a special type of writing celebration where we honor our students' hard work as writers. After completing a piece of writing, students get to share it with others—classmates, families, or special guests.

Think of it like a book launch—young author publishing at its finest, kinder, first, and second grade style! It’s all about making writing feel real, important, and worth celebrating. And let me tell you—when kids know there’s a party at the end of all their hard work, their excitement and effort go through the roof.

Who Gets Invited?

This part is totally up to you. I’ve done everything from a quiet classroom circle to inviting the principal, reading specialist, and families.

Here are a few guest ideas:

• Other classes (younger or older buddies love hearing young authors share)
• School staff (librarians, admin, support staff—invite them!)
• Families (in person, over Zoom, or through photos and videos)
• Just the class! Sometimes we even invite stuffed animals as guests for a cozy writing celebration.

If you want to make it even more special, let your students create simple invitations. They feel so grown-up delivering them!

How to Start Prepping?

Trust me, this part doesn’t need to be complicated. Here’s how I like to prepare:

1. Pick the Date: Choose a day near the end of your writing unit and add it to your calendar. Having a clear goal helps everyone stay motivated.
2. Final Drafts: Make sure students have time to revise and edit (even if that just means checking for finger spaces and punctuation).
3. Make It Fancy: Add a colorful cover and a little “About the Author” section. First graders LOVE calling themselves young authors!
4. Decorate the Space: A few tablecloths, a banner, and some snacks can make your classroom feel like a literary event.
5. Practice Sharing: Give students time to read their story to a partner or small group beforehand. It builds confidence and helps calm those happy jitters.

What to Do on the Big Day

Here comes the best part—the actual writing celebration!

Here’s how our young author publishing party usually looks:

• Set the Scene: Hang a “Welcome to Our Publishing Party” banner and place student writing folders on each desk like a gallery. Add clipboards and pens for guests to leave compliments or “fan mail” for each young author.
• Welcome Guests: Let students greet guests and explain the plan. It gives them ownership and pride.
• Author Spotlights: One at a time, students share their writing from the “Author’s Chair.” Or set up a gallery walk where guests rotate and read the work at each desk.
• Celebrate: Clap, cheer, and even toast with juice boxes! I love handing out little “Young Author” certificates or bookmarks.
• Snacks: Optional, but always a hit—especially if you call them “author snacks.”

This can last anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes. Keep it simple and centered on student joy.

What Happens After?

Once the celebration winds down, I always take a few minutes to let the moment sink in. Here’s how we wrap things up:

• Reflect: Students write or draw about how they felt sharing their writing.
• Thank You Notes: A few quick cards to guests or readers can go a long way—and they count as more writing practice!
• Display the Work: Post writing on the board or bind it into a class book for your library. This lets the young author feeling last all year.
• Keep the Momentum: Use the party energy to launch your next unit or dive into free writing. You’ll be amazed how excited your students are to write again.
• Writing Evaluation: Writers can evaluate their own writing and reflect on what they did well and would like to improve upon.

Writing a Hook for a Personal Narrative

As teachers know, it can be difficult to get kids to enjoy writing. Each year, your students will have to write a personal narrative. Each year, you'll have to read them. And this is why teaching your students how to write a hook will benefit both you and your students. While hooks can be, and should be used, in nonfiction and opinion writing, you'll probably begin your school year with a personal narrative so teach your students early. Teach them the skill of writing a good hook sentence that they can use all year long.

Onomatopoeia

Teaching writing skills to elementary students can be tedious, but it can be great fun! Onomatopoeia, or words that seem to make a sound, is a great way to “hook” students into writing a hook. Especially when they learn that the spelling of these sounds is pretty much up to them. Start by asking students, “What sound does a frog make? How about a lion? A doorbell? Well that's onomatopoeia and you can begin your story with it!”

Example: Ding, dong! Someone was at my front door.

Single Word Hook

This next type of hook can be creative, yet simple. It's a single word hook. Students think about words associated with their topic. Then they choose one word and use it to hook their readers. For example, a topic could be the park. Words associated with the park are swings, picnic, slide, field. . . Once a list of words has been brainstormed, the writer would choose a word and create a hook.

Example: Swings. I love to play on the swings at the park.

Imagine If Hook

So this hook is definitely one your silly kids can get behind. Imagine If requires thinking of some imaginary situation that could or couldn't happen, but using it to create a hook. Using their topic, your students would begin with Imagine if and then continue the sentence.

Example: Imagine if you caught a fish that granted wishes.

Ask a Question

The next idea for teaching your students how to write a hook, is a question. Similar to the Imagine If hook, kids can get silly with their questions and it brings joy to writing. Not only that, your students will get practice forming questions and using correct punctuation.

Example: Do you like to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches?

Use a Riddle

Your students will love writing riddles. In this case, riddles are simply hints at the topic. Kids love a chance to stump people and show off their smarts, so this is the perfect way to do that. Students tend to pick up on this hook pretty quickly and you'll enjoy reading the riddles in their books.

Example: What is small and green and can jump really high? A frog!

Hook Writing Practice

Now you don't want to just teach and forget it. Have your students practice their hook writing skills by giving them a topic and giving them the time and space to work on their craft.

Wait, I Need an Assessment?

Don't worry, I've got one for you. As a matter of fact, I have two spelling tests, which are both included in this resource.

The first covers initial consonants, final consonants, short vowels, digraphs, and blends. The second covers silent e, vowel teams, diphthongs, r-controlled vowels, and endings. The purpose is to give the second assessment to students who are clearly beyond blends without intimidating those that are not ready.

Now What?

OK, so now you've given this test and you're wondering, “Now what?” I'll tell you what. And it will be life altering. Not you've won-the-lottery-jackpot life altering, but “oh, this is helpful” life altering.

Score the Assessment

First of all, look over each student's assessment and begin scoring. Chances are your assessment will have a scoring sheet and it might have labels for the levels your students fall into, which is fine. But I have an alternative way to label the levels.

Spelling Levels

Now that you've looked over the spelling tests, you've probably noticed that there are varying levels of spelling within you class. You're likely to have students who write the initial and/or final consonant, students who are able to write CVC words, students that know digraph sounds, and so on.

Let me tell you, I love color coding so it will come as no surprise that I use colors to label spelling levels. The levels that make most sense to me and many teachers are the following:

• beginning and final consonant
• short vowels (CVC)
• digraphs
• blends
• silent e (CVCe)
• vowel teams
• diphthongs
• r-controlled vowels

Once the assessments are scored, make decisions about each student. Think about the spelling errors you noticed and place students in the group that would be most beneficial.

For example, if Sam spelled all of the CVC words correctly, spelled all but one word with digraphs correctly, but missed all of the blends, Sam would fall into the blends category. You might make a note of which digraph needed reviewing, but your focus would be to work on blends with Sam. The beauty is that Sam won't be the only student in this group, so you can instruct more than one student at a time.

Spelling and Writing

Now that you have this information in a spot that can be referenced easily, here's how you can use it to hold students and yourself accountable.

Let's say you're walking around the room as your students are writing and you notice Sam has misspelled ten and had, remind Sam that he knows the sounds in those words and to try again. But let's say Sam has spelled tower incorrectly, well that's OK. Not only is tower a two syllable word, but it also has a diphthong and an r-controlled vowel in it. Sam isn't there yet, but he can be held accountable for what he does know.

Phonics Instruction to Improve Spelling Assessment Data

Simply correcting students while writing isn't enough. We know that. Phonics is the key ingredient to tying reading and writing together.

Spelling assessments/inventories/tests are a valuable tool in the classroom. They provide insights into your students' understanding of language and their progress in literacy. However, simply assessing students is only the first step. The real benefits come from analyzing and utilizing the information gained to inform instruction and support each student. Elementary Writing Skills

Writing skills for elementary students varies from student to student. You've probably seen the various stages of writing development in your classroom at some point. Once you have an idea of each level, it begins to make sense why students aren't using some of the skills you've taught ad nauseum. Understanding a child's stage of development makes lightbulbs go off especially when you compare it to their reading abilities. Here's a quick rundown:

• Pre-Literate: scribbles, drawings, letter-like shapes
• Emergent: use of letters and environmental print
• Transitional: letter (generally initial consonants or initial and beginning consonants)
• Fluent: conventional spelling and writing

So, let's be honest, if a child is at the pre-literate or emergent stage, you probably won't notice the conventions you've taught. However when a child “reads” the writing to you, they'll probably be able to demonstrate it orally.

Supportive Writing Environment

I once had a first grade student who was struggling with writing. The first time she shared her writing with the class–her choice–she was at the emergent stage. I couldn't make sense of the words and neither could she. She could, however, make sense of the pictures, which were awesome. Not great artist awesome, but they told a story. So after she shared, I gave her a compliment. And it was the most sincere compliment of “Annie, you told the best story with your pictures!” She grinned from ear to ear with pride.

It wasn't that Annie didn't need to make improvements or that she didn't have writing goals. Looking past what she couldn't do and praising her for what she could do sparked a fire under her. This isn't the first student I have had this success with. My point is, you might see a student's writing and feel discourage. Try not to feel that way and look for the good because that's where the money is.

Writing Goals

So this is where teachers would want to begin thinking about elementary writing goals. Yes, Annie drew great detailed pictures, but what's next? Well, for sure we need to work on writing words. That will come with phonics instruction, but I needed to foster that. I needed to remind her of the new spelling skills she was learning and focus on those as we worked on writing.

You're probably wondering, “How do you help each student?” Well, I have an idea for you. Take an inventory of your students' writing needs and make groups out of those needs. You can read more about it here in Writing Goals: An Easy to Follow Step-by-Step Guide.

Traits of Writing

This leads us to the traits of writing. While we know that some kids are in the drawing pictures stage and some are writing fluently, they can all possess the characteristics of good writing.

The traits of writing include:

• Ideas
• Organization
• Word Choice
• Voice
• Sentence Fluency
• Conventions
• Presentation

While some students are drawing and some are writing, they can both tell stories. Some through oral story telling with pictures and some with words and pictures. Here I have more about the 6 Traits of Writing for Little Ones and how you can foster writing growth not just in spelling and conventions, but with with ideas and using words that bring writing to life.

The Writing Process

The writing process consists of steps that any writer would take to when writing. The steps can look differently in each classroom, but the steps are pretty standard. The writing process 5 steps are:

• Plan
• Prewrite
• Rough Draft
• Revise
• Edit
• Publish

Elementary Writing Organization

Organization can come in the form of students organization, teacher organization, and classroom organization. There's so much to think of when planning! Where will the students store their writing? How will I keep myself organized? What about the classroom!? Where do we store all of the resources?

Student Organization

Well, I've got you covered. Student writing is relatively simple. You'll need one folder for each student and some labels that read “still working” and “finished. Place the labels on the two pockets and students can store their writing inside. Elementary writing folders will be one of your students top used resources for the year.

Teacher Organization

To keep you organized, digital lesson plans are the way to go. Lesson plans in one place will simplify planning for you and give you extra time for things like leaving school on time to get home to your kids or fur babies.

Each lesson has a digital presentation and activities to increase your students' understanding of writing. The lesson build off the writing process, the six traits of writing, and can work perfectly in your writing workshop. Elementary Classroom Organization

Finally, classroom organization. Creating an environment that encourages writing takes a bit of planning. Kids love having a variety of materials from writing and illustrations tools, revising and editing tools, and engagement tools.

Mentor texts are by my favorite. I get a little too excited when I'm reading to my students and give them ideas to use in their own writing. After, I place those books in a special box and the kids can go back and take a look for ideas of their own.

Another tool, which isn't pictured, are small slinkies. Students can use these to help them stretch words and learn to spell independently. First, model how to say a word slowly as you stretch a slinky. Then let your students use them while they're writing.

As with any tool in the classroom, remind students these are tools and not toys.

Fostering writing skills in elementary students is an ongoing journey that requires creativity, patience, and dedication. But this begins with placing value on the tone set in the classroom. Begin by having an approach that meets each child where they are. Doing so will give students the confidence to create and stretch beyond their comfort zones without hesitation.

Narrative writing with a dash of friendly letter and a sprinkle of guided writing. Not sure if those are the exact measurements, but I am sure those are some of the ingredients for Friday Letters.

What are Friday Letters?

Friday letters are weekly letters written by your students to their families. In the letters, your students tell about their week at school while practicing:

• handwriting
• spelling
• punctuation
• friendly letter components
• writing dates correctly
• and so much more

But how do your students practice all this stuff? Don't worry, I know what you're thinking. I've got you. Friday letter writing is a great time to use guided writing.

What is Guided Writing?

Some teachers use guided writing in small groups and some use it with the whole class. Either way it's a strategy that brings students together to write about a familiar topic. In guided writing, the teacher plans with the students using a graphic organizer, uses sentences frames, and determines a focus for the students. The focus could be handwriting, ideas, elaboration, punctuation. . . I like to look at guided writing as a group writing experience where students contribute their ideas and know you'll be there to guide them if they need it.

Let's Write a Letter (A Friday Letter)!

Guided writing activities, like Friday Letters, gives students the chance to practice writing while you do a little hand holding.

Plan the Letter

Gather your students and talk about the great and not so great things that happened that week. Then record their ideas in a graphic organizer for students to use as they're writing. Eventually, some will be able to do this on their own, but begin by doing it for the students.

Begin the Letter

The great part about Friday Letters is that students are able to practice how to write out dates and greetings. It is the first thing we do when we write a friendly letter! And guess what? Your students will add commas when writing dates and capitalize proper nouns. Can you believe all the practice your students will be getting from one friendly letter?

The Body

Here's where your students will add all the juicy bits of their week. And here's where you'll provide the support they need as they begin to write. That support depends on the student, the group of students, the time of year, etc. . . Here are some ideas of ways you can support your students:

• sentence frames
• adding adjectives
• focus on punctuation
• using current phonics patterns
• combining sentences
• capitalizing the pronoun I
• adding feelings
• elaborating on one event

There's truly no end to this list. It could go on and on.

The Closing

Once your students have completed the bulk of the letter, it's time to finish it up with a simple closing like Sincerely, Jay or Love, Cal.

But that's Not It!

On that Friday or the following Monday, send home the letters for your students' families to read. Then ask a member of the family to write a note on the back and return it.

My students take them home on Mondays and return them on Friday with their homework folders. It works out pretty well. If a member of the family doesn't write a note on the back or a student doesn't return it, it's not the end of the world. Those that are returned, save them. Save them and make a book out of the letters as an end of the year keepsake.

How great will it be to look back at the progress your students make?

Before you begin, it's good to keep in mind that each center needs to be modeled for students. Some can be modeled in less than a minute, and some will take longer. But if you really want your centers to run smoothly, always set the expectation and explain how to use it. One way to do this is to create a chart with the expectations for the center. For instance, 1. Work quietly. 2. Take care of materials. 3. Clean up after yourself.

Being proactive like this will make your centers run smoothly and keep you sane. With that being said, here are 9 ideas for writing centers.

Idea One: Journal Writing

Journal writing is an easy activity to use in a center and it can be used to assess students' growth in writing ideas, grammar, phonics, etc. Just provide a journal to each student. Give students a question or prompt to answer in their journals. Provide them with other resources that will allow them to be independent. For example, high frequency words, editing charts, or picture dictionaries. Think of what your students will need in order to let you work with small groups or whatever it is you're doing. This writing office is a great example of a tool students can use to work independently.

Idea Two: Postcards and Letter Writing

Your students will love this center, especially if you have a mailbox to put their postcards and letters in. Gather some postcards to make a quick writing center. Show the students the parts of a postcard and explain that people send them to others to tell about places they've been or to just say hi. Have 5″ x 7″ pieces of construction paper, crayons, and pencils available for students to use. Also put some sheets of paper and a friendly letter anchor chart in the center and kids can write letters, too. To further create an independent center, include a writing office as a tool for students to use as they're writing. This way your students can problem solve on their own.

Idea Three: Sentence Building

Have student practice the conventions of writing with this center. Write a sentence on a sentence strip, cut it into individual words, and done! You can also use colored sentences strips and color code by subject/predicate or subject/verb/adverb. It's up to you and a great way to integrate writing practice into your centers. Leave whiteboards or paper at the station for kids to write the sentences after they've been built. Include an editing checklist with the materials for students to check for punctuation, spaces, and capitalization. You can find an editing chart in the writing office found in Idea One.

Idea Four: Word Walls

Word walls can take a bit more time to assemble, but they can be used for weeks, months, or the whole year depending on the word wall. Monthly word walls with a theme offer kids many ways to practice their writing. They can use the word wall to write letters, stories, directions, labeling, and the list goes on. The words offer a scaffold and give kids the support they need. There are a variety of activities your students can do and it'll keep their attention.

Idea Five: Draw and Label

Leave out blank sheets of paper for kids to draw pictures and label. This center gives students the chance to add details by looking at the parts that make the whole. If your students use the sketch and label strategy in their writing, this will give them practice on this skill. Idea Six: Paragraph Writing

This center might sound a little scary at first, but some of the best centers come from concepts you have taught and can now be practiced independently. Read this post for more valuable information about paragraph writing. Once your kids are familiar with paragraph writing, it can become a center that can be used all year long. Students begin by cutting out the details of a main idea and gluing them in the main idea web. Then your students use the main idea to write a main idea sentence. After that, they use the detail bubbles to write 3 detail sentences. Finally, your kids will add a conclusion and they'll have a 5 sentence paragraph.

Idea Seven: Handwriting

Easy, easy! Keep handwriting books or just sheets of paper available and have students practice writing letters and words. If you really want to get your students excited, leave out some fancy pencils or pretty pens. At the end of the week, have your students look for their favorite letters and have them show off their handwriting to a friend.

Idea Eight: Comics

Your students will love these! Have this paper available to students and they will enjoy writing stories using comic book paper. They can practice storytelling, spelling, punctuation, and drawing all in one activity. You might find that some students want to create an entire book. In that case, have plenty of paper ready!

Idea 9: Write the Room

Write the Room gets kids up and moving. Students simply get a sheet of paper, walk the room, and find the hidden words that have been stapled or taped to the walls and furniture. The words can be sight words, parts of speech, contractions, or even sentences. There are many resources available on Teachers Pay Teachers, but you can also make your own pretty quickly. You will need index cards or paper cut into index card size, a pen, and a stapler or tape. Write what you would like kids to practice writing on the cards, hide (not too hard) around the room, and let kids find and write them.

Remember managing and preparing centers doesn't have to be a challenge. Make it easy on yourself and try out these ideas for writing centers. Your kids will practice writing and working independently. It's a win-win!

In the last two posts, I provide ways to introduce main idea and details. Furthermore, the post details how you can teach students to use a graphic organizer. Now find out how you can teach young writers to write a beginner's paragraph.

As with any activity, model this first and practice with the kids. But once that's done, your students will be able to create paragraphs independently, and you'll be able to set up a writing center with activities, which will be laid out in the next post.

Step 1: Main Idea Web

Begin by having your students complete a main idea graphic organizer. If you missed it, here is a post with a variety of activities that will help your kids build an understanding of main idea and details.

Step 2: Write a Paragraph Introduction

Using the main idea, show students how to write an introduction for the main idea paragraph. For example, I love to get dressed up in Halloween costumes. Show students how to include the main idea into the sentence. It's always great to have them practice orally first.

Step 3: Add Paragraph Details

Using the detail bubbles, write sentences for each detail. For example, if bumble bee is the detail, you could write: My favorite costume is a bumble bee. Or, Last year I dressed up as a bumble bee. Whatever the detail is, it needs to be used in a sentence.
